Workers doorknock Brisbane; skies fill with penalty rates message

Brisbane residents can expect a knock on the door this weekend as workers take to the streets, speaking to residents about the imminent threat of a cut to penalty rates for weekend workers.

Brisbane workers will join thousands in key electorates across the country taking part in the national door-knock.

At the same time, the skies over Brisbane will be filled with a clear message to our federal politicians: Protect Penalty Rates.

Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association (SDA) Queensland Secretary, Chris Gazenbeek, said with workers facing a multi-pronged attack on their penalty rates, including from the Prime Minister and the Productivity Commission, workers have been forced to take action.

“We’ll be out in force on the weekend, door-knocking local residents to speak with them about the impact a cut to weekend penalty rates would have on our community,” Mr Gazenbeek said.

“A cut to penalty rates is a cut to take-home pay that workers can’t afford and don’t deserve.

“This is an attack on some of our lowest paid workers. Penalty rates are often the only thing helping workers make ends meet. Stripping them away will be disastrous for many local families.

“Weekends still mean something in Australia. Penalty rates are vital compensation for workers who miss out on so much to keep our community running over the weekends.”
