*All information is correct for Woolworths Supermarkets in Queensland.

UPCOMING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS FOR THE CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR PERIOD ARE:

  • Monday, 25 December 2017;
  • Tuesday, 26 December 2017;
  • Monday, 1 January 2018 &
  • Friday, 26 January 2018.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS FOR FULL-TIMERS AND PART-TIMERS

  1. Whether your store opens or does not open for trade on a public holiday, and you choose not to work, you are entitled to be paid ordinary time earnings for your normal contracted shift.
  2. For Full-time employees, if a non-working day falls on a public holiday, you will receive by mutual agreement either:
    (a) another day off in lieu with pay to be taken at a mutually agreed time within 28 days after the holiday falls or during the week prior to the holiday, or
    (b) an equivalent day’s wages, or
    (c) one extra day added to your annual leave.For part-time employees, you shall be entitled to (a), (b) or (c) above where you work an alternating roster and the public holiday falls on a day on which you work in any week of your roster cycle.
    A part-time employee who works an average of 5 days per week, whose non-working day falls on a public holiday, shall also be entitled to (a), (b) or (c) above.
  3. Where your store opens for trade on a public holiday and you would normally be rostered to work and you volunteer to work, you will receive:
    (a) an additional 150% for all time worked, or
    (b) the employee can elect to take time off in lieu (TOIL) at the penalty rate.
  4. Engagement across two days
    (a) Where the majority of a full-time or part-time employee’s rostered engagement falls on a public holiday, the entire engagement shall be regarded as the public holiday.
    (b) Where a full-time or part-time employee is rostered for an engagement with an equal number of hours on a public holiday and the day before a public holiday the entire engagement shall be treated as a public holiday.
    (c) Where a weekly employee is rostered for an engagement with an equal number of hours on a public holiday and the day after a public holiday the entire engagement shall be treated as a normal shift provided the weekly employee is entitled to the benefit of (b) above. If the weekly employee is not entitled to the benefit of (b) above, then the entire engagement shall be treated as a public holiday.

Public Holidays for Casual Employees
Payment for work is 270% with a minimum payment of 3 hours.

A casual employee who is rostered to work a specific number of hours on a day and is sent home early on a public holiday, shall be paid for the full number of hours specified.

Christmas Eve

All Woolworths stores must cease trading by 6pm on Christmas Eve.*

Work after 6.00pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, will be subject to the following provision:

Within the reasonable requirements of staffing levels for a store, requests by full-time or part-time employees to not be rostered to work during the above times and days shall not be unreasonably refused. Provided that where the Company is unable to obtain sufficient volunteers to work, the Company will, subject to the Act, retain the right to direct the working of the employee’s normal roster.

Employees need to advise the Company at least 4 weeks prior to the Thursday Eve before Good Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve that they do not wish to work at that time or day.

The Company will seek volunteers at least 14 days in advance to finalise the rostering needs and advise employees at least 7 days prior.
Where an employee’s request is granted the hours shall be subject to the normal make up time provision.

*Brisbane Airport Woolworths will cease trading at 10pm on Christmas Eve.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  1. What happens if a Public Holiday falls in my Holidays?
    Don’t worry. This day will not be deducted from your annual leave balance.
  2. Do I have to work on a public holiday?
    No, all work on a public holiday for ALL employees is voluntary. I repeat, VOLUNTARY!
  3. Do roster changes affect my entitlement to public holidays?
    No, your roster cannot be changed to avoid payment of penalties, loadings or other benefits. Should this occur you are still entitled to the benefit.
  4. What happens if a public holiday falls on my RDO?
    Don’t worry, you will receive by mutual agreement either … another day off in lieu with pay to be taken at a mutually agreed time within 28 days either before or after a public holiday falling due, or an equivalent day’s wages, or one day added to your annual leave.
  5. I am a permanent night-filler and I work across 2 days. Which day is my public holiday?
    Your public holiday is regarded as the day on which the majority of hours are worked. Also, the entire engagement shall be regarded as the public holiday for all purposes of your Agreement. Refer to Point 5 above.
