Hundreds of members continue to benefit from the SDA’s FREE Accident Insurance Policy each year. Whilst fractured bones dominate the claims received, it is important to note that there are many other injuries covered. These include but are not limited to:

  • Death;
  • Dislocations;
  • Shortening of leg;
  • Third degree burns;
  • Loss of sight or limbs;
  • Achilles tendon ruptures,
  • ACL’s;
  • Paraplegia and Quadriplegia;
  • Permanent partial disablement; and
  • Loss of hearing, loss of fingers and loss of toes.

In the 12 months from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021, there were over 130 successful claims on the Accident Insurance Policy. The total payout in the 2020/21 financial year was $131,050. Settlement amounts ranged from $350 to $16,000. Given that the SDA is the only trade union in Australia which provides this policy, it confirms once again that it pays to be a member of the SDA!

For members’ information, this SDA benefit has been operating for over 35 years throughout Australia. The Accident Insurance benefits combined with the Student Scholarships have returned close to $10 million back to members over the last 30 plus years in Queensland.

Am I covered by the Accident Insurance Policy?

This policy covers you outside the times you are covered by workers’ compensation. This policy covers all financial members of the SDA. It doesn’t matter whether you are full-time, part-time or casual. It’s FREE; there are no premiums to pay; there are NO forms to fill in; there is NO medical required and the cover is world-wide.

Please call or email the union office if you think you may have a claim.
