Easter Sunday – Now a Public Holiday!

December 1, 2016 News

Easter Sunday has officially become a public holiday throughout Queensland.

The SDA surveyed our members and they told us that Easter Sunday is a significant day in our calendar. We then surveyed the general public and they supported the SDA lobbying the State Government to bring Queensland into line with Victoria, NSW and the ACT.

I personally met with the Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, and it is pleasing that she stuck by her commitment of supporting working families by introducing legislation in the early hours of this morning in the Queensland parliament to have Easter Sunday declared as a public holiday from 2017 onwards.

As you know, with a minority Labor government, the numbers were very tight in the parliament. I would also like to recognise the great support of the Katter’s Australian Party in recognising the significance of Easter Sunday and supporting the passage of the legislation through the parliament.

This is the first public holiday legislated in Queensland since the 1920’s.

Easter is an important time of year for our members who wish to spend it with family and friends.

This is fantastic news for SDA members as we can now enjoy Easter Sunday just like most other Queenslanders.

This is a great victory for our members and I am elated with the result.

We lobbied hard and we won!
